Chebera Churchura National Park (CCNP) is a treasure trove of natural biodiversity located in the Southwest Ethiopia Peoples' Region, nestled between the Dawro and Konta zones.
Establishment and Geography
The park was officially gazetted in 2005 (1997 E.C.) following the
active petition and participation of the local Dawro and Konta communities and
their respective administrations. Spanning a total area of 1,410 square kilometres,
the park is situated within the middle Omo Gibe basin, approximately 475
kilometres from the capital, Addis Ababa.
A Sanctuary for Megafauna
What distinguishes CCNP is its role as a critical habitat for
Africa’s majestic giants. The park is home to a thriving population of over 800
African elephants and more than 5,000 Cape buffaloes. Beyond these icons, the
ecosystem supports 40 species of large and medium-sized mammals and 18
species of small mammals.
Avian and Botanical Diversity
The park is an ornithological paradise. Preliminary studies have
identified 137 bird species, six of which are endemic to Ethiopia. Its lush
vegetation and dense forests are equally remarkable, housing 106 woody plant
species, including six endemics. The wilderness is also a natural gene bank for
indigenous flora such as wild ginger, coffee, korarima (cardamom), enset,
frankincense, and gesho.
Hydrological Wonders and Unique Species
CCNP is adorned with breathtaking lakes, including Bahee, Bullo,
Shita, Koka, Keribela, and Chofore, which serve as major attractions for
visitors. Notably, one of these lakes is home to a rare golden fish species, recognised by international scientists and officially named Garra chebera in honour of the park. The landscape is further enriched by stunning waterfalls,
natural hot springs, and mineral water sources.
The "Elephant Paw" (Duna) Lodge and the Koysha Project
As part of the visionary "Gebeta Le Hager" (Dine for
Ethiopia) initiative launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), the park has
seen significant infrastructure development under the Koysha Project cluster. A
highlight of this development is the "Elephant Paw (Duna) Lodge."
This high-end eco-lodge provides seamless access for tourists while
significantly enhancing the park’s management, wildlife monitoring, and
conservation efforts.
